Five Steps You Can Take Today to Control Your Own Destiny

The past several years have been a challenging time for individuals and organizations. We've had to rethink and in some cases reinvent the value proposition we bring to our work. Take these five steps to help you survive, and thrive, in the new environment we are confronted with in the 21st century.

1. Have a Plan: Now more than ever you need to step back and develop a plan. Peter Drucker, one of the most notable names in management theory, says the goal of a business is "to attract and maintain customers." Strategic Planning is the process of determining the future and what resources will be needed to achieve your goals. The big picture is your vision, this defines what business you are in and what you want to become. It is a statement of what you or your organization will look like. You need to define values, how do you see your relationship with customers, stakeholders, employees and all others. Next is the external assessment SLOT: strengths, limitations, opportunities and trouble. Evaluate trend analysis, what changes are taking place in your industry, in your customers' world and in other areas of the world. You're now ready for your mission statement which should describe how the vision will be achieved over a specific time frame.

2. Work Your Plan: To succeed you must execute your plan. Identify critical goal categories, what must happen, or what must we make happen for our mission to be achieved? Planning goals must be SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. Your "market plan" needs to identify market segments, market communications and sales support. Use the "Four Point System": one point for each name you add to your database, two points for obtaining an appointment with a decision maker, three points for meeting with a decision maker and four points for signing an agreement or contract. You must work this system each day, four points daily. The doctor says an apple a day, each day, not seven apples on Sunday. Build your plan and then work your plan.

3. Customer Focus: Identify and satisfy customer needs. Know who your customer is then stay focused on their needs. If you listen, identify and dig out the causes of customers' problems, and develop profitable solutions, you will build your business and provide value to those customers. Drucker defines the goal of business, "to attract and maintain customers"; you must be customer-focused.

4. Implement and Deliver Value: To maintain customers you must deliver value in your contacts and engagement. Value can be helping them make money/save money, improve performance or faster implementation. Find ways to measure and prove what it is you bring to the table. You can attract customers with marketing; however, to retain them you must deliver value.

5. Be Flexible: Your follow-up plan and implementation process must be tracked and reviewed on a regular basis. Create a dashboard to measure, track and focus on the activities that must be done for your success. The dashboard is an excellent tool that shows if the business is on track, if not you can then identify actions you must take to reach your goals. Be flexible--the market and world is constantly changing and evolving. Review your plan often.

A New Product Release - Preparing For Success

Dashboards For the Automobile Industry

A dashboard is important for the smooth functioning of every kind of industry. It not only puts all the Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) under one overarching umbrella for easy reference, it also adds a beauty angle to the otherwise staid data visualization practices. If we take the automobile industry as an example, we can aptly illustrate how a dashboard for the automobile industry would work.

The first point to consider are the KPI's of the automobile industry, that is, what are the factors that a senior level management executive would like to keep track of while analyzing the performance of the company over the period of year. The most important indicator is the revenue. To represent the financial aspects on a chart we tabulate the finances into expenditure and revenue. Facebook Tip - How to Mass Email Your Network

Effectively using social media is becoming increasingly vital for any online business marketing and branding. Simple tips that are (what I call) "effort-efficient" to communicate with your network in order to move them to action is paramount to accomplishing aggressive marketing goals for your online business. Sending mass e-mails using Facebook is of course easier and faster than sending separate e-mails to all of your Facebook friends yet many do not know how to do so.

It's important to learn how to use this feature to simplify your life and save your time. It's quite easy to learn, and takes only a few minutes to execute, even for the initial setup.

Step 1

Sign into your Facebook account, using the user name and password.

Step 2

From your dashboard, find the '"Friends" link on the left side of your computer screen. When you're taken to the next page, look to the left of your screen again and you'll see a link titled "Lists." If you've never created lists in Facebook, you'll have to create them in order to send mass e-mails.

This is where I emphasize that you create and maintain a list of your Facebook friends. If you haven't done this before then you might want to start by making a list that includes all of your friends. This is the only real "donkey work" that you'll have to do in the front end. There are many justifications for multiple lists to organize your business friends, such as if you have certain competitors that you don't want taking your ideas or if you have both friends & business relationships using the same page.

I typically suggest that there be 2 different accounts that are applicable to both but there are arguments on either side of that issue. You will also want to create a list if you start a "group" as well in order to have a list of those that have joined and communicate with them separately.

Step 3

After creating your lists, visit your inbox using the link at the top of your screen. You'll see to the right a link which will allow you to "Compose a New Message." Click that link, and an option will come up, allowing you to e-mail a list or individual friends. Enter the list that you'd like to mass e-mail.

NOTE: New to Facebook is a requirement that each list can only be 20 people or less. This basically means that you need to make a list for every 20 then put all those lists in the email "To:" section. This adds a little more donkey work in the front end however it is still just as easy to execute once set up.

Step 4

Paste the pre-written message into the text box, and create a title for the message so your friends will know what you're writing to them about. When you're sure that the message is pasted just proof it and correct. I typically write it in Word and then paste so that I can use the editor and auto spell-check.

Step 5

Click the send button below the text box.

Again, organizing and maintaining your lists are important and more laborious to do if you wait till your over 1000 friends. The better your lists are maintained the more effective you will be at moving your network to action. Replacement Headlight Bulbs - How Long Should These Car Bulbs Last?

If one of your headlight bulbs has blown you are normally the last to know about it, driving around blissfully unaware that there is light only coming out of one headlight, whilst other drivers can clearly see that one of you car bulbs has blown. Once you know that a bulb has blown you then have to find the right replacement and install it. But how do you know that you are getting the best from your bulbs and is there a way to have them last longer?

In effect there are really just three types of car bulbs that you can install in your headlights and they are, standard halogen bulbs, modern upgrade xenon bulbs and heavy duty long life bulbs. When determining how long a headlight bulb should last its is well worth remembering the old adage that "The light that burns twice as bright, lasts half as long".

Standard halogen bulbs, are the type of bulb which was fitted by the vehicle manufacturer at the factory and are normally full OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specification. These type of car bulbs will typically last between 350-400 hours of use and emit a reasonable level of light onto the road.

Upgrade xenon bulbs, like the Osram Night Breaker or Philips Extreme Power bulbs use xenon gas to produce a light up to 90% brighter than standard halogen bulbs, making night-time driving safer and less stressful, and because of their high performance construction they can be expected to last between 200-300 hours.

Finally there are long life headlight auto bulbs and, as their name suggests, they will certainly cut the amount of time you will need to spend replacing your car bulbs. By using reinforced heavy duty components you can expect a long life bulb to last over 50% longer than ordinary halogen bulbs, giving you an expected bulb life of 500-600 hours, whilst still producing the same light output as ordinary halogen bulbs. Long life car bulbs are slightly more expensive than their standard halogen counterparts, but are considerably more economical when you factor in their extra long life span.

When replacing the bulbs in your headlights it is recommended, and good sense, to change them both at the same time. Firstly if one bulb has blown the odds are very strong that the other one will blow shortly afterward, and by changing them together you wont have to repeat job for a while, and secondly if your bulb has comes to the end of its life span it will be past its optimum light performance output.

One final point to note when changing your headlight car bulbs is to not touch the glass with bare skin during the process. No matter how clean your hands are, bare skin will always leave a residual grease mark on the glass, this creates a hot spot on the and will eventually lead to a bulbs premature failure. So, to get the best from your headlights always change your bulbs in pairs, wear protective gloves during the process and pick the right type to suit your requirements.

The Power of Ezine Article Writing to Get Rapid Traffic

If you're new to internet marketing and want some rapid, targeted traffic then ezine article writing takes some beating. I've proved it myself. Before I had my own product to promote the thought of devoting time and effort to writing articles only added to my concerns about overwhelm. At the same time, I thought, what would I have to write about that would interest anyone? How wrong I was.

I decided to make a start and go with the top ezine publisher - EzineArticles.com.

Test the Water - It's Warmer Than You Think

For those of you that haven't tried ezine article writing yet, writing your own articles and submitting them to an ezine directory is a super effective way to get traffic to your site. I was delighted to find that within just a couple of days my first article was approved and available live online. Not only that, but when I did a Google search for the keywords I had used, I found that I was getting top positions on pages one two and three.

Fantastic!

The reason being, that my chosen article directory, EzineArticles.com, is ranked so highly in the search engines, particularly Google, that my article was picked up by them pronto and available for all to see, in double-quick time.

Quality Before Quantity

Writing ezine articles is very satisfying and rewarding. You will need to be consistent though. The temptation may be to throw everything in at once with everything you want to write about submitted over a few days; then it fizzles out because you run out of things to write about. Take it easy. Some people recommend submitting articles every day, others, just twice a week. As long as the articles are of good quality, then that will beat quantity any day; well that's what I believe. Your articles must provide useful information to the reader.

EzineArticles.com and WordPress

By the way, I've just discovered a really cool feature from EzineArticles.com. It's the ability to write a blog post which is also then submitted at the same time as an Ezine.com article. The EzineArticles WordPress plugin allows you to submit your original WordPress posts to EzineArticles.com, and monitor their review status right from the WordPress Dashboard. A brilliant idea: now you get two-for-one and increase your exposure at a stroke.

Driver Distraction - Battle For the Dashboard

This may be one of the more fiercely debated issues in the concept cars of the future. How much can the driver handle? "The race to funnel information, communication and entertainment into vehicles has accelerated as the costs of hardware such as Global Positioning System receivers and display screens have plummeted," says a recent article in the Wall Street Journal.

Drivers website has been following this race very closely over the past several years. We have watched the pieces come together and also followed the discussion about driver distraction. What's shaping up, or should be shaping up, is a major debate over the future of human autonomy, privacy and safety.

Can we humans be trusted to manage such a difficult task as driving, or should we be heavily managed and restricted by laws, social engineering, or perhaps even sidelined completely by emerging technologies that take us humans out of the picture and let the vehicles drive themselves?

Trusting humans

The distraction issue is not new. There was an intense debate back in the 1930s about whether radios should be allowed on the dash. When mobile 'cell' phones began to be widely available in the 1990s, the controversy exploded. In August 2000, the U.S. National Highway traffic Safety Administration sponsored an internet conference on the topic.

This past week the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation addressed the issue in an episode of MarketPlace, and others have joined the fray this past month with special programs devoted to the issue.

In short, there is no lack of media attention to the driver distraction issue.

Typically, media stories about the dangers of driver distraction will feature two prominent elements: a tragic story resulting from a gross example of distraction; and a demonstration of how distracting technologies such as phone texting and navigation systems can be.

These stories have a familiar shape to members of the traffic safety and driver education community. For a long time, it's been obvious to experts on driving that one of the biggest problems plaguing drivers is distraction. This has been a problem long before mobile phones and navigation systems. If there are no technology distractions there's that other, perhaps even more dangerous distraction -- absentmindedness.

For the most part, driving doesn't take all of our attention. That's just a fact. Boredom and absent-mindedness have played a huge role in the horrendous traffic fatality toll that has dogged our enjoyment of the automobile over the years. The people who design those public service ads saying "give driving 100% of your attention" do understand all of this. They just hope you'll try a little harder.

Before there was texting there were drivers who drove off the road into trees, drove full tilt into cars stopped on the shoulder, drove right through red lights without even seeing them. In one case that made headlines in Canada some years back, a driver plowed into a group of brightly dressed cyclists, on a straight flat road, on a bright day, in the middle of the morning! Police determined no drugs or alcohol were involved. Friends of the cyclists wanted him charged with murder.

Back in the 1970's a major study of road crash causes determined "looking but not seeing" as the most commonly identified specific crash cause. Apparently, a driver could actually look right at something but not actually take in critical information about speed and direction.

Obviously, the process of seeking out the information you need to drive is not all that straightforward.

Divided attention

Driving is a task that depends on attention dividing. It's multi-tasking by nature. And there will always be distractions as long as humans drive cars.

The question is, how do drivers learn how long they can take their eyes off the road ahead? How do they learn what to look at and what not to look at? How do we drivers train our vision instincts?

It would seem to be a no-brainer that vision training would help. However, there are limitations there. Over the past few decades the value of training and education has been heavily discounted by researchers and governments just about everywhere. Today's training is more about getting a license than dealing with the problems that beset experienced drivers.

One of the scariest things about automobiles and us human operators is that, at any particular time, we do not have full control over where our eyes focus and what kind of attention we pay to particular things that are going on around us. Training is one factor in that process, experience is another. Since training typically ends at licensing, the rest of the process is handled by life's great instruction academy -- the school of hard knocks.

As one traffic safety expert pointed out some years ago, after licensing, drivers build two sets of habits -- good ones they pick up by dint of experience, and bad ones they think are good until they are caught out. Phoning and texting would come under the latter heading. The more you get away with it the more complacent you become.

Drivers, laws, and technologies

Over the past decade the role of 'telematics' in driving has accelerated. The transfer of wireless information over phones, internet, WiFi, is bringing to the car all the connectivity of home computing.

For the manufacturers of the technologies the early problems were in the arena of marketing as much as tech development. Customers didn't understand them, or didn't want to pay. There were complex partnership to be considered and the whole issue of which tech goodies to package with the vehicle.

Now costs are coming down and the technologies are more sophisticated and easier to use. As the Wall Street Journal article mentioned above points out, the flood gates are opening up - potentially, that is.

What happens next depends on public reaction, politics, the wiles and skills of the technology developers, and the power of marketing. There are probably some extremists who want everything off the dash, maybe even the radio, and others who want everything on.

How the safety issue plays out may depend as much on politics as the realities of safety and driver distraction. Can drivers be trusted? How much? What kind of laws and restrictions?

These will all play a role in the future of driving and the automobile. Hopefully, informed public discussion will play a major role in the outcomes.

Selling cars today means a very quick reality check on current prospecting (marketing) strategies and tactics. No longer is lot traffic and showroom walks are the main prospecting strategies.

The Best Mobile Computing - MacBook Air Laptop Plus Snow Leopard 10.6

With all the hypes and marketing brainwashing, I finally I got a copy of OS X Snow Leopard also known as version 10.6.

The installation was standard like the previous version but there was no Archive and Install option available and it went straight to upgrade my existing OS. I was worried. After more than a hour, I heard the Mac 'ding' sound and I ran toward the screen looking forward for a safe upgrade. I was glad that my Air laptop was successfully upgraded.

The first thing I did was to checked my hard disk storage space. To my amazement, 10.6 gave me back almost 13GB of storage space. I was worried again if my video and other files were deleted during the upgrade. Double checking again and again, I was so delighted that Snow Leopard 10.6 saved so much storage space. One thumb up!

The overall performance of my Air Laptop increased significantly. I could feel the speed. Everything I did was so much faster, applications loaded faster, Dashboard displayed faster, Spaces switched faster and the list could go on. I quickly restarted the OS to test the startup speed. The performance was over my expectation, at least two times faster than 10.5. Another thumb up!

Chinese language input on Multi-Touch. This was the main reason that enticed me to installed Snow Leopard. The Chinese input with Multi-Touch was first introduced on iPhone and iPod Touch. Combining keystrokes and keyboard input, now I could simply used it on my Air to enhance my writing. Three thumbs up already!

The most intensive Parallels Desktop 4.0 with Windows XP SP3 loaded in Snow Leopard. Another delighted discovery, my Windows XP was up and running two times faster than previously with 10.5. With Snow Leopard 10.6, I reclaimed a hefty lot of processor speed. For this, one big thumb up!

There were many more enhancements Snow Leopard offered. For me, These four reasons were more than enough to justify my upgrade. Four thumbs up for MacBook Air laptop running on Snow Leopard 10.6, the experience was awesome.

Social Media - Learn 5 Ways to Use Your Facebook Fan Pages For More Visibility Online

Social Media is any online platform where people can connect and communicate with each other and it can be used to develop online relationships, create visibility and build credibility for your internet business. In this article I will show you how to use your Facebook Fan Pages to create more visibility online.

Strategy #1 Create a Welcome Page for New Visitors - You can add a separate page for all new visitors to your Fan Page using the FBML application. To find all the available applications scroll down to the bottom of your Fan Page and on the left side click on applications. Then do a search for FBML (Facebook markup language). Add the application to your page.

After adding the application return to your page and go to edit your page under your picture on the top left. This will take you to a list of all your applications. Find the FBML application and click on edit to add the information to your page. Add the title of the page such as Welcome Page (this will show up as the tab title). You can then add text, html, images, an opt-in box almost anything you want. Don't forget to invite your visitors to become a fan in the message and then save the page.

Now to set this page for new visitors, go back to your main page and in the middle area click on options, then settings, and then click default Landing Tab for Everyone Else, in the drop down menu click welcome. This will allow first time visitors to see the Welcome page. After they become a fan they will land on the wall like everyone else.

Strategy #2 Add a Video Tab - Again go to applications and do a search for You Tube Video Box. Add this application like the above example. Click edit and you will be able to add the URL to a You Tube Video. You can add as many videos as you like. A short (1 - 1 ½ minutes) Welcome Video is a great idea!

Strategy #3 Add a Blog Feed Tab - Import you Blog feed using the Social RSS application. This application will allow you to add any RSS feed to the tab. I like to set this one to show up in the sidebar also.

Strategy #4 Add Articles on the Notes Tab - Take your most popular articles (the ones that get the most views) from EzineArticles and add 1-2 per week to the Notes Tab. This will show up on your news stream and will also go out into the streams of all your fans.

Strategy #5 Add a Fan Page Box to Your Blog - This is a new tool that Facebook just released that allows you to add a box to your blog which invites visitors to your fan page. Click on the link under your picture which says add fan box to your site. Follow the prompts to get the html code necessary to create the box and copy the code. For a WordPress blog, go to your dashboard then go to widgets and add a text widget and then paste the saved code.  The box will show up in your sidebar. Visitors can become a fan right from the box or they can click on the link to go to your page.

A landing page, simply put, is the first page visitors see when they arrive on your site. You can create different landing pages for each marketing campaign you are building and the landing pages help you guide customers in the direction you want them to go.

6. Allow RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds from your blog. This is one of the most powerful ways to get visitors to your new site. This will allow other sites to put your content on their page with a link back to yours. Basically it will allow other site owners that subscribe to your blog to post your post on their site. This means of course that they will then have a link on their site automatically back to yours.

7. Learn how to autoblog. This kind of goes back to what I mention earlier. Sometimes it is hard to create new content for your site everyday which is something that anyone who is wanting to grow readership of their blog will have to do. Keep in mind you want your readers to come back everyday so that you will build up a relationship with them as well as be able to put whatever product you are promoting in front of them.

If you are not familiar with auto blogging then I will give you a brief explanation. Basically you will have the ability to get other peoples post that are relevant to your niche automatically posted to your blog without you having to do anything other than the initial setup. If you understand the small business marketing tips that I'm about to share with you, I believe you have more understanding of the rationale of marketing than 90% of small business owners.

People are very poor at communicating powerfully what they do. I mean communicating in such a way that other people get it and want to know more. That really is the foundation of all marketing.

I see over and over again people saying things about what they do that couldn't possibly interest anyone. Yet, that's what most people do most of the time.

Another thing is that people don't have much of a structure, a plan to put their marketing into action. It's usually just a random series of unconnected events with minimal follow through.

Once small business owners get the attention of their target market they don't know what to do with that person, what information to give them next, how to move them along in the process so that someone turns from stranger to prospect to client.

Granted, a handful of people come to me who know a lot of stuff but they have a mindset issue.

To tell you the truth, I would bet on someone who knows how to work with intention over someone who knows every single technique in the book. The person who has the intention will find a way to make things work whereas the person who has all the knowledge might not have the desire, the intention, the clarity to make it work.

Ok, got a little bit sidetracked, so let's get back on track. The very first thing you do is you get your marketing message together. You figure out who you're selling to, what you are selling and what do your customers get out of it.

That's any communication with a potential client. That communication might be verbal. It might be a letter that you send, it might be a website that they look at or a presentation that you give.

The very first thing that you want to do is get their attention and interest.

People want more information once you have their attention and interest. Answer the main questions in your marketing material, "Is this service for me? Will it work for me in my business?" For example if you look at most websites it says, "Here's my service, here's what we do and here's how it work s". There's very little about the client or what they're interested in.

If you give prospects the right information at the right time, then you actually buy their time, their trust and their commitment.

Now, they go, "Oh, that's interesting, tell me more. How does that work?" Then if they're interested enough, know something about you, understand that you've got something that can help them, they're ready to explore. Then, you're in the sales conversation.
